JAGUARS - JEC Spain – Xmas Bash - Written by Eric Arnold
The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain held its last meeting of 2014 on the 14th December at Restaurant Nugolat near Elche. Our second visit to this brilliant restaurant. May I take this opportunity to thank all those people that attended and for all those members that supported us through 2014. A very special thank you to Ian McMenemy, our Events Director for organising another fabulous event and the sterling work he does organising all of our meetings.
Restaurant Nugolat is located just outside Elche on the Carretera Dolores, Km 5. Restaurant Nugolat has beautiful gardens, great parking unfortunately we had one of those rare days when the weather let us down, it was very overcast when we arrived and soon started to rain which eventually developed in to a torrential downpour. That restricted the potential for the event pictures. We were allocated our own special dining room, perfect for us, good job as the rest of the restaurant was absolutely packed.
On arrival, as the weather was rather inclement, most people congregated in the bar for a few drinks and a chance to catch up with old friends and to meet new members. We sat down for lunch just before 2:00pm in our private function room in which the tables had been set “to the nines”; they were incredible. I had high hopes for the rest of the day; I was not to be disappointed. The feast commences. To start, fresh bread, garlic and tomato, a plate of succulent ham and Manchego cheese, a crisp smoked salmon salad and baby squid in a light tempura coating, some of the best I have ever had, fabulous. This was followed by hot potato and ham croquets. On offer for the main course were two types of paella, fish, solomillo of pork in a light mushroom sauce, and lamb chops, my choice, tender succulent, melt in the mouth even better with mint sauce (my own supply). Dessert was ice cream and an almond flan. Drinks a plenty accompanied this delicious feast, unlimited wine, beers, water and coffee. They even finished the meal off with a glass of cava and a liqueur all for 25.00 Euros a head, fantastic value for money. If that was not enough we were visited by a brilliant Mariachi band and we were treated to two short arias from Ms Lydia Hernandez, a professional opera singer and companion of our good friend Chris Fox, I have to compliment the staff and the management at Restaurant Nugolat, the service and the food were exceptional.
I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and the members that bought guests, bringing the total to 56 people and 17 cars which included a stunning new XF Estate, a stunning motor, a number of XK8’s, XJS’s, XJ’s, S types and many more. The meeting also held another surprise, in recognition for all his hard work looking after our facebook page we presented David O’Shea with an award. A big thank you to all those people that brought items for the planned Grand Auction in March. At the end of the meeting we presented Vincente, one of Nugolats management with a JEC plaque recognising there efforts in making it such a great day.
A great meal, brilliant company, music and laughter - just an exceptional day, why not come and join us at our next meeting on the 25th January. We have a few things planned for 2015, The Big One at Parador Siguenza in March, another Magical Mystery Tour maybe a run down south, a chance to meet the members from the Costa Del Sol.

JAGUARS - Magical Mystery Tour
The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain tried something different this time, a Magical Mystery Tour. Members were only told that we would be travelling in convoy to an undisclosed location, where on arrival would check in to a hotel for one night and that something special would be arranged for the evening meal. Places were limited as the selected hotel only had 12 rooms. As you can probably guess the event was fully booked in just a few days. The event took place over the weekend of 18th & 19th October.
Participants were asked to congregate at the Repsol petrol station in Sax at 11:30 Hrs on the Saturday. As is normal, the weather was fabulous, I was particularly grateful for this as the final destination was at a considerably higher altitude. Each car was given a sealed Emergency Pack, just in case anyone got lost. Lead by me, the convoy left at 11:30 sharp, up the A31 towards Madrid. Exiting the motorway at junction 136 towards Alpera and eventually Alcala del Jucar our final destination. This route to Alcala del Jucar is stunning visually but also a great road to drive. We arrived at Alcala del Jucar at 13:00 Hrs and parked the cars behind the little hotel, aptly named Hostel Acala del Jucar. After checking in, participants were free to explore this beautiful location. Of particular note, is the weir and weir pond, the river, the lush vegetation and especially the Cuevas del Diablo, the caves of the devil. Lots to explore in this unusual place.
That night, I had arranged a superb meal, something a little special, 5 starters, a choice of three main courses, a selection of desserts, wine, water, coffee and liqueurs. I am not going into detail as it would take to long - let’s just say it was a fabulous meal. We started at around 19:00 Hrs with drinks and people were still enjoying the evening some 8 hours later! As I said, only 12 rooms at the hotel, unfortunately one participant dropped out at the last minute due to illness so we only had ten cars but it did include some beauties, Chris Fox’s XK120, David Sleap’s absolutely stunning XKR Silverstone, David Shea’s XJS drop head. These do not detract from the other fabulous examples of Jaguar engineering, two lovely S types, two XJ8’s, a couple of X types and of course “the Guvnors” XK8 drop head. All just beautiful “motors” and a delight to see. I must admit they did look good all lined up in a row.
Sunday morning, after breakfast, check out, then most people went there own way and explored more of this stunning part of hidden Spain.
JAGUARS - La Cova host’s the Big Cats
Sunday 28th September, yet another terrific day out with the members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain. On a somewhat overcast day but thankfully rain free, this time we took the members to a fabulous little restaurant in El Campello. Restaurant La Cova, on the cliff top overlooking the harbour of El Campello with wonderful views over the harbour and along the beach. A perfect setting to show off 22 samples of Jaguar engineering perfection.
Restaurant La Cova is a well known and very popular restaurant, especially with expats. The food is fabulous and great value for money. On top of that, stunning views while you partake in a leisurely lunch. La Cova’s menu is typically English fare with a slight Spanish twist. We chose the standard Sunday lunch. A choice from three starters, quiche, prawn cocktail or pate, followed by soup, then a choice of a roast dinner, beef, pork or turkey or sea bream for the fish lovers. A choice of dessert’s, and coffee. Wine beer and water are included. Brilliant value for 20.00 Euros a head. I can highly recommend it.
Parking is a little tight in the small car park and The Big Cats pretty well filled the spaces available. A nice surprise was a stunning example of the new Jaguar F Type Convertible, 100,000.00 Euros worth of incredible Super Car, kindly brought along by Javier from Mundicar in Alicante. “I want one”. All of our members cars are beautiful but this meeting brought out some exceptional examples of these stunning cars. Some of the old favourites were there as usual, David Shea and his fabulous gold XJS Convertible. David Sleap our Vice President brought along his newly acquired XKR Silverstone Convertible, an exceptional example of this rare limited edition Jaguar. More examples of XJS’s, XK8’s, XKR’s XJ’s, X Types, XF’s and a new XJ, perfection on four wheels, “The Guvnors” XK8 Convertible. completed the collection this time. A total of 22 cars and 58 people, a really good turnout considering the weather could have been better. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, and of course a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event.

JAGUARS - Big Cats in Altea Golf Club – Don Cayo Restaurant Written by Eric Arnold
The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain got together again on Sunday 25th January 2015, what a fabulous day in all respects. It’s mid winter, yet we had blue skies, beautiful sunshine and warm enough to sit outside to admire the views and chat to friends old and new. Perfect weather for taking that cherished Big Cat out on the road. Somewhere different this time, up the motorway to the “dizzy heights” of Altea, the Don Cayo Restaurant in Altea Golf Club. Parking was a bit limited but we did manage to get all the cars in a row. 20 beautiful examples of Jaguars automotive engineering and 64, yes 64 people for lunch. A little down on the numbers of cars, it just so happens that a few of our beloved big cats are “at the vets”. May I take this opportunity to thank all those that attended especially the people that have never been before. As always a big thank you to Ian McMenemy for all his hard work organising this event, and a special mention and thanks to Hans Nilsson and David Sleap who helped pull this meeting together.
The superb selection of Jaguars at this meeting as always, enough to make the pulse of any “petrol head” race. We were graced with a stunning range of Jaguars as always, Ian McMenemys and David Sleaps S Types, 11 and 12 years old respectively and looking like they have just left the showroom. A fabulous XJS Convertible in white, and a seriously impressive Mk 2, X Types,XK8’s, XKR’s XJ’s, and of course the guvnors XK8 DHC to complete the line up.
We could not have wished for a better day or location, out in the sun, pre dining drinks on the terrace looking over the golf course in the valley, sitting there in shirt sleeves in January. We are so so fortunate. The pleasure started with the waiters bringing round a little “amuse bouche”, piped potato tower around a grilled prawn, delightful. Into the restaurant, stunning tables, starched white tablecloths, I just knew this was going to be good. White, Rosé and smooth fruity Rioja were brought to the table. The first course was firstly a piece of art, a tartar of salmon and avocado, topped with a cream cheese, herbs and a lumpfish caviar, dressed with mustard and balsamic reduction and salmon caviar. The description says it all. Second course, a Tandori Chicken salad, a stunning contrast to the first course, fresh, aromatic with that hint of spice. Various meat and fish courses were available for the main course, my wife and I chose the lamb served with a dauphinoise potato, we even had mint sauce a rare commodity in Spain. Dessert was a light gateaux. We finished the day with a few announcements and presentation of the JEC Spain plaque to the Maitre D” for Don Cayo. Outside for the mandatory group photo then a coffee or a last drink, then head for home, a fabulous afternoon.
Our next meeting is on Sunday the 1st March 2015, location to be confirmed. Watch the website www.jec-spain.com for more details. This will be the last meeting before The Big One, a joint meeting between JEC Spain and JEC France at the end of March, this really will be something special. Other events in the planning for this year is another Mystery Tour and a “Trip Down South”.
JAGUARS - Big Cats Smash All Records
1st March 2015
All records smashed. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain had a previous attendance record of 25 cars and 66 people, that record was smashed at our meeting at Restaurant Heradura in Los Montesinos on Sunday 1st March. The new record to beat now is 36 cars and 98, yes 98 people, just shows we must be doing something right. I think the weather helped, what a glorious day in all respects, blue skies, balmy temperatures and mostly empty roads. Can you imagine cruising with “the top down” anywhere in Good Old Blighty on the 1st March, not a chance! As it happened, our good friends from the Phoenix Classic Car club also had their meeting just down the road, so it was an ideal opportunity for some of our members to enjoy the collection of classic cars before coming to La Heradura for our meeting. On arrival, we mostly congregated on the outside terrace, enjoying the beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures. Then it turns out that we had set some other new records for the Oldest Attendee with one members father aged 91 and we eclipsed the furthest travelled record, one couple came all the way from Marbella, some 530 Km. May I take this opportunity to offer a very special thank you to all those that attended especially the people that have never been before. As always a big thank you to Ian McMenemy, our dedicated Events Director for all his hard work organising this event, and a special mention and thanks to David Shea for his sterling work on our Facebook pages and David Sleap for his help making sure everything runs smoothly.

As usual Restaurant La Heradura looked after us really well, pre dining drinks on the terrace, basking in the sunshine and followed by a very civilised glass of a crisp, dry Cava when we first sat down in the restaurant. That was followed by 6 courses of delightful repast. Totally “stuffed” and satiated, we finished the day with a few announcements, then outside for the mandatory group photo then a coffee or a last drink, then head for home and still warm enough to have the “top down”, a fabulous afternoon.
Our next meeting is rather special, “The Big One”, a joint meeting between JEC Spain and JEC France at the end of March. We are expecting nearly 70 Jaguars and 134 people. We believe this will be the largest collection of Jaguars ever to get together in Spain, see the events pages for more details. Following that we are visiting Rebate again, a firm favourite with our members and a beautiful lake side drive to get there. No firm dates yet but the middle of May looks likely. Ian our Events Director is planning something special for September and we will be “cruising” down to Malaga for our “Trip Down South” in November. Why not come and join us.
JAGUARS – THE BIG ONE
Largest collection of Classic Jaguars ever in Spain - March 28th, 29th, 2015
After months of planning The Big One as it became to be called actually happened. A joint meeting between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain and The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, France, plus a few guys from the Madrid Jaguar Club. The result was 73 fabulous Jaguars cleaned and polished to “within an inch of their lives” and 151 very enthusiastic Jaguar owners. The main event took place on Saturday 28th March and Sunday 29th March 2015 but many of the participants took two or three days to travel to and from their home to the event in Northern Spain.
Cars and owners came from all over Spain and France and congregated at the fabulous Parador Siguenza hotel in Siguenza. A 13th Century castle that has been converted into a glorious luxury hotel. An outstanding collection of Big Cats graced the cobbled grounds of this iconic building. It made “an old man” very happy, what an amazing sight. I am not going to try and mention all the cars, there were so many that deserved a special mention but, to do them justice would take up too much room in this report. On the Saturday evening we all gathered for the “Black, White & Bling” Gala Dinner, held in the medieval hall. A selection of exquisite “tapas” starters then either beef wellington or a fish dish, accompanied with some stunning wines. Dessert and coffee was preceded by the Grand Draw, prizes included bottles of 40 and 20 year old Cognac, an Iberico Cured Ham, a gold plated Jaguar fob watch, a 7” Android Tablet, HD DVD Car video recorder, display and camera, various bottles of superb wines, a cheese and many other items. At the end of the evening we held a Grand Auction. All the items in the auction were donated by some of the members. Many, many thanks to those who donated items to this fantastic auction. We made just slightly over 1,800.00 Euros, of which 600.00 Euros will be kept for club funds and the remaining 1,200.00 Euros will be donated to Cancer Research UK.
Sunday started early, breakfast then “start your engines” was called at 09:30 and 73 glorious Jaguars snaked through the little town of Siguenza and then squeezed in to the town square. I am not quite sure how we got them all in but we did. I have never seen a sight quite like it, a phenomenal photo opportunity. A meeting with the Mayor then at roughly 11:30, start your engines was called and the Big Cats cruised out of the town and into the Spanish country side on their way to another Parador hotel in Soria, where a very special “posh tapas” lunch had been organised. That brought the organised parts of the event to a close. People made their own way back to Siguenza in their own time
May I take this opportunity to offer a very special thank you to all those that attended, I know many of you travelled many hundreds of kilometres to attend this event. A very special thank you to Graham Searle, General Manager, JEC UK who came all the way from England to give us his support. Special thanks to Chris Park and Tim Sankey from JEC France, without their help and support The Big One would not have been such a tremendous success. As always a big thank you to Ian McMenemy, our dedicated Events Director for all his help and his hard work organising our normal events which allowed me the time to conceive and organise this event, and a special thank you to David Shea for his sterling work on our Facebook pages. A very very special thank you to Patricia Palau Lozano in Parador Hotel Group Resevations who was always helpful and proffesional and a pleasure to work with. Last but not least Alfonso Cuervo-Arrango, the events Press Officer who helped in so many ways not only with the press but with the organisation and arrangements through the day. I am already getting requests to “do it again”, just Bigger & Better, April 2017 is the target date.
JAGUARS – Restaurant Rebate host’s the Big Cats - Written by Eric Arnold
Sunday 21st June, the Big Cat’s come out to play. Restaurant Rebate was the location this time for yet another terrific day out with the members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain. As is usual in Spain, again we were blessed with a beautiful warm and sunny day, perfect for cruising with the top down. If you have never been to Restaurant Rebate near Pilar De Horadada, believe me it is worth a visit. A little tropical oasis, fabulous food, great service and flamenco dancers in the court yard. A recipe for a perfect day out.
Turn out for the day was good, 60 people and 20 beautiful Jaguars gleaming in the sunshine. Many members made their way to Restaurant La Fortaleza as the first meeting point. We left there in convoy to make our way to Rebate. The route took us through the orange and lemon groves and round the fabulous Pedrera lake with its turquoise water. If you have never visited the lake, it is something you should make an effort to do, it is spectacular.
Arriving at Restaurant Rebate we started off with a “drop of bubbly”, a Cava reception in the lush gardens under the “shade” trees, what could be more civilised. A chance to meet old friends and to take the group pictures. As always the food provided by the restaurant was exceptional and very different from that normally offered by Spanish restaurants. I am not going to try and describe each course it would take up too much room to give each one justice. 7 fantastic tapas style starters, then hake, beef or guinea fowl for the main course, sumptuous desserts, wine, beer, water and coffee’s. A feast fit for Royalty for just 25.00 Euros. As we always get looked after really well, this time we presented the Maitre D with a small memorial cup in recognition of our appreciation.
It was a busy day all round, lots of announcements about future events. Our good friend Beryl Juchau was presented with an ”Outstanding Member” award for the numbers of guests she provides which boosts our numbers significantly. Brian Patterson and Molly provided items for a surprise raffle which raised 165.00 Euros for club funds, a big big thank you to them, it really is appreciated. Then last but not least we had a presentation from Peter and Adrian from Archoil offering their additive products. As if this was not enough, we had a short break half way through lunch to watch the Flamenco Dancers on the garden terrace.
For us, if Rebate does have a negative, parking is not reserved and our beautiful big cats have to mix in with other cars which makes it impossible to make good pictures of the cars in any sort of group. Just take my word for it, the cars that did turn up were stunning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, and of course a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event, a brilliant job as always..
The next meeting will be on Sunday, 2nd August when hopefully we will be returning to Restaurant Las Palmeras but this has to be confirmed. Just looking into the future a little bit, Ian, our Events Director has organised something special for 6th September, a trip to a Monastery up in the mountains in Sierra Espuna near Totana with an option of an overnight stay. November is our Trip Down South to Malaga and Lake Vinuella. These and other events are detailed on our web site. Last of all, The Big One, in March 2015 was so successful we are going to do it again, just bigger and better. The Big One 2017 will be held at Parador de Leon. Built in the 16th Century it was originally the head quarters for the Military Order of Saint James. It is now Paradors flag ship 5 star hotel. This event is proving to be very popular already, currently we are expecting over 300 people and 153 beautiful Jaguars. Even though it is nearly two years away, if you want to come to this event, you have to register your interest now.
JAGUARS - La Torreta.

Fabulous blue sky and brilliant sunshine greeted the
members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain for
their latest event on the 18th October 2015. A Country
Lunch at a little known, but excellent restaurant called La Torreta located half way between Sax and Elda about 30 Km. inland from Alicante. Most of the cars congregated at the Repsol Gas Station in Sax before going on to the restaurant just a couple of kilometres away. May I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and to thank Ian McMenemy our Events Director for putting together such a brilliant day.
We finished up with 22 beautiful Jaguars, all polished to within a inch of their life, every single one of them looked fabulous and it would be impossible to pick one’s out as exceptional. This superb selection of Jaguars almost filled the car park of the little country eating house. As for Members and Friends, we had a great turnout with 54 people. This very nearly filled the restaurant. I have to compliment Simona and her girls from La Torreta for providing not only fabulous food but brilliant service to 54 hungry and rather noisy automotive enthusiasts.
Restaurant La Torreta went to exceptional efforts to make this event a success. The food was fabulous and for a price that was phenomenal value for money. We started with a plate of sliced fried cheese on a bed of thinly sliced tomato drizzled in olive oil, and a basket of fabulous fresh baguette slices, followed by deep fried Boquerón’s (small fishes), then Sepia a la plancha, the tenderest griddled squid you have ever tasted. A choice of main course was offered, slow cooked shoulder of lamb, entrecote steak, sea bass with cava sauce, grilled hake, or for a small supplement either a fillet (solomillo) steak (the best you will get anywhere) or a Chuleton Steak (T Bone) a huge piece of prime beef. A selection of deserts were then offered as well as good strong coffee. Wines consisted of El Cotto 2008 for the red or for a small supplement, the gold award winning Tarima Hill, Olite for the rose and a very pleasing little Riesling for the white or for those who wanted it endless beer.. All this for 24 Euros which offered our members exceptional value for money. This is the third time that JEC Spain has visited La Torreta, I am sure it will not be the last. Some members have already said we must repeat this event again in the not too distant future.
Brian & Molly Patterson organised another raffle to raise a few “shillings” for the club, their efforts and commitment to the club has been exceptional. In recognition, Ian presented them with a small trophy to show our appreciation. Simona from La Torreta was also given a trophy recognising the visit of the JEC Spain to her terrific little restaurant
A last chat and a final coffee or last slurp of wine and then people started to depart just after 5:00pm however some of us were still there at 6:00pm - what a great day. Our next meeting is provisionally planned for Sunday the 17th January 2016, venue yet to be decided, so keep an eye on the web site.
Our Recent Sunday Lunch Event at the Hotel Monasterio Santa Eulalia, known as the “Summer Breeze Drive”.
Well, what can I say, you cannot win them all … it was anything but “Summer”, it never stopped raining the whole time. I suppose we can’t complain, historically the weather has seldom let us down.
Anyway, its congratulations to our 42 guests who braved the weather & came along to this event. The Hotel located in the Sierra De Espuna is in a fabulous location which would have looked so much better had the sun been shining. The general opinion was, it was good fun as more than half the guests stopped over in the hotel & we all got to know one another a bit more than we normal can.
Brian & Mollie, organized a raffle for club funds, raising Euro 110, many many thanks to the two of them for that… truly valued members always working in the interest of the club.
Dan & Karen Callaghan complete with five guests, made a weekend of the event & celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary with us, rewarded with a bottle of Spanish bubbly.
A hearty breakfast on the Monday morning & we were all again refreshed ready for our respective trip home, once again in the rain. A big thank you to Ian McMenemy, our dedicated Events Director for organising the event, a great job as usual.
On request from some of our members we will be trying to organize the next Sunday Lunch Event around the middle of Oct. (not yet fixed) at Restaurant La Torretta, near Elda. This restaurant has always been very popular with our members due to their superb kitchen & is one not to be missed. Particularly noted for it fabulous steaks

Sunday 2nd August 2015, slightly overcast, chance of rain. I should have known better, just seeing our beautiful Jaguars out on the road makes any day full of sunshine, the clouds dispersed and a glorious summers day welcomed us all. Before I start this report, I must tell you, we have something special planned for our next meeting so do not miss it, check out the details on our web site www.jec-spain.com
This time we made a return visit to Las Palmeras, hotel and restaurant in Crevillente and we were not disappointed. I have to say. Las Palmeras is a little lacking as far as “kerb appeal” is concerned but the restaurant, function rooms and the terrace and pool areas are stunning. On top of that, there are plenty of parking spaces for our beloved Jaguars.
On arrival, most people congregated around the pool terrace, a few G&T’s, a beer or two, coke of course for us drivers, or just a tonic, slice of lemon! Great to meet our old friends again. We sat down for lunch just before 2:00pm in a private function room overlooking the pool, very nice. Hot bread, garlic and tomato to start, a plate of succulent ham and Manchego cheese then a choice of starters, I had the “health conscious” tuna salad presented in the “deconstructed style”. Flavoursome vegetable soup was also an option. Fish, lamb chops or pork for the main course or for a small supplement a solomillo which was my choice, delightful. I have to compliment the staff at Las Palmeras, the service was absolutely spot on. Wine flowed freely during all the courses. Desserts, coffee’s and a small brandy, well, not so small actually, fabulous. Too hot to sit on the terrace for a little more light refreshment. Las Palmeras brought us all complimentary cava or liqueurs, very civilised.

I am pleased to say, among the attendees were many of the old favourites and some new member’s cars as well. I have to say, when you looked at them all lined up it was a fabulous sight to behold. An art show in steel and leather which included some of the most iconic example of automotive art ever made. The meeting also held a few surprises, our good friend Brian Patterson’s XJ8 won the “Ladies Choice” well actually is was the choice of a young couple from America who were visiting. As usual a big thank you to Ian McMenemy our Events Director for his sterling work organising the event. To show our gratitude to Las Palmeras, Ian presented a trophy to the Restaurant Manager.
Satisfied and satiated, some members started to depart just before 5:00pm however some of us were still there at 6:00pm - what a great day. Our next meeting is something a little special, our “Summer Breeze Drive” up to the Santa Eulalia Monastery in the Sierra De Espuna mountains in Murcia for a rather special lunch with an optional overnight stay on Sunday the 6th September. After months of planning The Trip Down South as it became to be called actually happened. A joint meeting between The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain, Costa Blanca and The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Spain, Costa Del Sol. The result was 43 fabulous Jaguars cleaned and polished to “within an inch of their lives” and 81 very enthusiastic Jaguar owners. The main event took place on Saturday 21st November and Sunday 22nd November 2015.
Cars and owners came from both regions and congregated at the fabulous Parador Malaga de Golf Hotel in Malaga Costa Del Sol. This stunning modern hotel situated on a golf course on the coast of Malaga was a perfect location to gather the outstanding collection of Big Cats. Lined up in the specially reserved parking with everything ranging from a beautiful 1950’s XK 120 to brand new cars. A glorious site to behold if you love Jaguars.
Most people checked in on the Saturday afternoon and took advantage of the beautiful warm sunny day with drinks on the terrace. On the Saturday evening we all gathered for the “Black Tie & Bling” Gala Dinner. A selection of exquisite “tapas” starters were delivered to the specially prepared Jaguar monogrammed tables then a veal or a fish dish, accompanied with some stunning wines. Dessert and coffee was followed by the Grand Draw. Prizes included bottles of Gran Reserve Brandy, a presentation bottle of 12 year old Chivas Regal, an Iberico Cured Ham, a gold plated Jaguar fob watch, Swarovski encrusted Jaguar jewellery, a superb bottle of wine and many other prizes. This was followed by a request for donations partly towards club funds but mostly for a most worthy cause, Help For Heroes. Many, many thanks to all those who made such generous donations. The donations totalled a fantastic 780.00 Euros plus a small profit was made from the Grand Draw and the administration charge. I am delighted to inform you that a total of 700.00 Euros will be donated to Help For Heroes.
You may be asking, why have I called this article “The Big Cat Burglary”, at some time during that Saturday evening a “Cat Burglar” stole our Club Mascot, a one metre long Jaguar Cat from the hotel reception. I am delighted to say that with the help of the CCTV in reception and the tremendous efforts of the staff and management of the hotel our beloved mascot was recovered the following day.
Sunday started leisurely, breakfast then a group picture and “start your engines” was called at 11:00 and 43 shining Jaguars headed of into the mountains of Andalucia. A beautiful scenic but testing route out to Lake Vinuela, a turquoise jewel of water sparkling in the sunshine. Perched on the edge of the lake, the Hotel Vinuela hosted our lunch. A Cava reception followed by an exquisite lunch that I thought was just fabulous especially as it only cost 27.00 Euros per person including wine and other refreshments. I had the goat pate, with pressed fig, salad, glass bread and quince jelly, I followed that with “sea and mountain”, huge king pawns and a “rooster” leg on a bed of aromatic rice. Many other options were available. Tiramisu and coffee to finish. That brought the organised parts of the event to a close. People made their own way back to Malaga Golf in their own time. Most people stayed the night and left after breakfast the following morning.
May I take this opportunity to offer a very special thank you to all those that attended, I know many of you travelled many hundreds of kilometres to attend this event. A special thank you to Philip Wray, Regional Director, JEC Spain Costa Del Sol who helped arrange and organise the event. A big thank you to Parador Hotels for helping to make this event such a success.

JAGUARS - Big Cats in Altea Golf Club – Don Cayo Restaurant. Written by Eric Arnold
The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain got together again on Sunday 17th January 2016, what a fabulous day in all respects. It’s mid winter, yet we had blue skies, beautiful sunshine and warm enough to sit outside on the terrace to admire the views and chat to friends old and new. Perfect weather for taking that cherished Big Cat out on the road. A return visit this time, up the motorway to the “dizzy heights” of Altea, the Don Cayo Restaurant in Altea Golf Club. Parking was a bit limited but we did manage to get all the cars in a row, 25 beautiful examples of Jaguars automotive engineering and 62 people for lunch. May I take this opportunity to thank all those that attended especially the people that have never been before. As always a big thank you to Ian McMenemy for all his hard work organising this event..
The superb selection of Jaguars at this meeting as always, enough to make the pulse of any “petrol head” race. We were graced with a stunning range of Jaguars as always, Ian McMenemys newly acquired XJ, looking like it just left the showroom. A fabulous XJS Convertible in white, and a seriously impressive new 5.0 ltr XK, X Types,XK8’s, XKR’s XJ’s, XF’s, fabulous examples of both new and old, and of course the guvnors XK8 DHC to complete the line up.
We could not have wished for a better day or location, out in the sun, a cava reception and pre dining drinks on the terrace looking over the golf course in the valley, sitting there in shirt sleeves in January. We are so so fortunate. A group photograph then into the restaurant just before 2 o’clock, stunning tables, starched white tablecloths, I knew from previous experience that this was going to be good. A white wine, and a smooth fruity Rioja were brought to the table. As tasters the table was already set with mini cold kebabs and prawn cocktail vol-eu-vents. The first courses were pieces of art, either brie in a puff pastry case or a shredded duck salad, I tried both, absolutely delicious. Second course, a beef steak on a bed of pureed potato. A beautiful pepper sauce dressing and seasonal vegetables. Another choice was a pork roulade, and another dish which I forgot to take note of, sorry. Dessert was apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. We finished the day with a few announcements and a presentation of a “Valued Member Cup” to our long time member Baard Lund, a well deserved recognition. We also presented a JEC cup to the Maitre D” and Chef’s for Don Cayo in recognition of an excellent lunch. Then a coffee or a last drink, then head for home, a fabulous afternoon.

JAGUARS – Big Cats in Heredades
Sunday 28th February 2016. This time we visited somewhere new, Casa Antonio in Heredades. Great to meet our old friends again. Must have been a good day as we were still there at 6:00 pm. May I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and the members that bought guests, bringing the total to 45 people and 18 cars. The meeting also held a few surprises, our good friend Colin Stickland won the 2015 Character of the year award, for his enthusiasm and support of the club. We found out some time ago that Hans Nilsson is addicted to M&M’s so just for a little humour we rewarded Hans with two bags of M&M’s for supporting the British confectionary industry. To show our gratitude to Restaurant Casa Antonio Ian presented a trophy to the Restaurant Manager.
Our next meeting is something a little special, our Spa Break - Pamper yourself at Balneario De Archena Spa Resort. 2 days and nights at this luxurious spa, superior rooms and a special deal. Arrive Monday 4th April and depart Wednesday 6th April 2016.
JAGUARS – Spa Break in Archena
Well, you cannot win them all, this event did not exactly go to plan. Two nights in the in resort 4 star hotel in superior rooms and two days of pampering. We met up on the 4th April and drove to Archena, even then the weather did not look very promising. On arrival, we started off with a cava reception then an introduction and short tour of the resort. The hotel check in took much longer than it should have done then it started to rain. Many people took advantage of the treatments available but even that did not run as smoothly as I would have liked. Evening meal in the restaurant was very good except we could not get coffee at the end unless we walked (through the heavy rain) 100 Mtrs. to the Casino bar, ridiculous. So overall not as good as I would have liked but the feedback from those that did take part was pretty good.
JAGUARS – Big Cats visit La Cova, El Campello
Sunday 24th April 2016, another terrific day out with the members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain. Beautiful Cars, beautiful people, brilliant food, great service and fabulous weather, the perfect recipe for a perfect day out. This time we took the members to a fabulous little restaurant in El Campello. Restaurant La Cova is located on the cliff top overlooking the harbour with wonderful views along the beach. A stunning setting to show off 20 perfect samples of Jaguar engineering.
Restaurant La Cova is a well known and very popular restaurant, especially with expatriates . The food is fabulous and great value for money. On top of that, it would be difficult to find a more stunning location while you partake in a leisurely lunch. La Cova’s menu is typically English fare with a slight Spanish twist. Our brilliant Events Director, Ian McMenemy had negotiated a special deal for us. A choice from four starters, quiche, langoustine salad, tandori chicken salad or homemade pate with melba toast, followed by a really tasty vegetable soup, then a choice of knuckle of pork, roast beef, sea bream with prawn cream or salmon with cava sauce for the fish lovers. A choice of dessert’s, and coffee. Wine beer and water are included. Brilliant value for 20.00 Euros a head. I can highly recommend it. Lunch started at about 1:45 and we were still there till gone 5:00, soaking up the evening sun on the terrace and chatting with friends. Hood down, V8 purring we drove home along almost deserted roads, life does not get much better.
Parking is a little tight in the small car park and The Big Cats pretty well filled the spaces available. A nice surprise was a stunning example of the new Jaguar XF in white and David Sleap’s fabulous XKR Silverstone looked exceptionally good. But then again all the Jaguars there looked fabulous, just because they are Jaguars. Lots of XJ’s and XJR’s this time as well as a beautiful XJSC. “The Guvnors” XK8 Convertible. completed the collection this time. A total of 20 cars and 51 people, a good turnout but it could have been better. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, and of course a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event, a brilliant job as usual.
The next meeting will be on Sunday, 5th June 2016, where we will celebrate the clubs 5th Anniversary. I cannot believe it is 5 years since I started the club. This very special event will be held at Restaurant Rebate. This is always a very popular restaurant with the club so reserve your place as soon as possible. I would really appreciate a good turnout for this anniversary event. Then later in the year we have Rivers, Lakes & Waterfalls BBQ. JAGUARS – Restaurant Rebate host’s the Big Cats 5th Annivesary Written by Eric Arnold
Sunday 5th June 2016. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain is 5 Years old, who would believe it. With just 4 members when I first started the club, we have now grown to over 300 members in the Costa Blanca and more than 100 members in the Costa Del Sol.
For the 5th Anniversary event, we chose Restaurant Rebate, it is something special and in a fabulous location. As is usual in Spain, again we were blessed with a beautiful warm and sunny day, perfect for cruising with the top down. If you have never been to Restaurant Rebate near Pilar De Horadada, believe me it is worth a visit. A little tropical oasis, fabulous food, great service and flamenco dancers in the court yard. A recipe for a perfect day out.
Turn out for the day was brilliant, 83 people and 31 beautiful Jaguars gleaming in the sunshine. Initially, many members made their way to Restaurant La Fortaleza as the first meeting point. We left there in convoy to make our way to Rebate. The route took us through the orange and lemon groves and round the fabulous Pedrera lake with its turquoise water. If you have never visited the lake, it is something you should make an effort to do, it is spectacular.
Arriving at Restaurant Rebate we started off with a “drop of bubbly”, a Cava reception in the lush gardens under the “shade” trees, what could be more civilised. A chance to meet old friends and to take the group pictures. As always the food provided by the restaurant was exceptional and very different from that normally offered by Spanish restaurants. I am not going to try and describe each course it would take up too much room to give each one justice. 7 fantastic tapas style starters, then a choice from 10 main courses which included duck, entrecote steak, rabbit, salmon, pork and even lobster thermidor for a small supplement. Sumptuous desserts, wine, beer, water and coffee’s. A perfect feast for our 5th Anniversary celebrations and all for just 27.50 Euros. As we always get looked after really well, this time we presented the Maitre D with a small memorial cup in recognition of our appreciation.
It was a busy day all round, lots of awards and announcements about future events. Our good friends Molly and Brian Patterson organised a raffle which raised 207.00 Euros for the club funds, and a big, big thank you goes out to them. Ian McMenemy, Events Director and his lovely wife Uschi were presented with Certificates of Excellence recognising all their hard work and dedication to the club. They were also presented with a voucher which entitles them to a 5 star meal in any restaurant of their choice. My wife Barbara and I were also presented with memorial cups to mark the day. As if this was not enough, all four of us were given presents of brandy and chocolates from Molly and Brian Patterson just to say thank you. I started the club because I am passionate about Jaguars and I have run the club to get like minded people together and give them an opportunity to enjoy themselves. It is lovely to know that all our efforts are very much appreciated.
For us, if Rebate does have a negative, parking is not reserved and our beautiful big cats have to mix in with other cars which makes it impossible to make good pictures of the cars in any sort of group. Just take my word for it, the cars that did turn up were stunning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, we even had people come all the way from Malaga, Almeria and Javea. But most of all, a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event, a brilliant job as always.
JAGUARS – Rivers, Lakes & Waterfalls BBQ
This event was something a little special, something I had been planning for quite some time. A two day event which included two nights at the fabulous Parador Hotel in Albacete, a BBQ with music and dancing on the Sunday then on the Monday a visit to Lagunas de Ruidera with a stop off in a sleepy little town called Munera as guests of the Mayor.
Sunday 18th September 2016, 28 beautiful Jaguars arrived at the Parador Hotel in Albacete. I must say they did look impressive all lined up outside the hotel. This collection included three cars that need special mention. Len and Barbara Pillings new Jaguar F Pace, the first one I have seen in the “flesh”, take my word, very nice indeed. The second and Joel Darget’s replica D Type, something you do not see very often and Joel had brought it all the way from the Costa Del Sol. The third was David Sleap’s superb XKR Silverstone. A total of 58 people checked in, this included 7 people who had come all the way from the Costa Del Sol. At around 19:00 Hrs we gathered for pre dinner drinks in the bar then outside for the BBQ and Dancing in the fabulous hotel grounds that evening.
Monday 19th September we gathered in front of the hotel for the Group Pictures then “Engines Start” at 09:45 Hrs. In a perfect convoy the Big Cats skirted Albacete and headed out on the N430 towards Ruidera a total distance of some 120 Km. However “Our Ian” had arranged a little surprise on the way. We turned off the N430 and headed towards Munera, after a short distance we are picked up by the Police escort who helps get all the cars safely into Munera’s town square as guests of the Mayor. A big thank you to Leondro Lopez Valido for suggesting the idea and organising the whole thing. Maybe you saw us on La Mancha television later that day. We stopped for about a hour then with the help of the Police Escort again we made our way back to the main road and continued our convoy to Ruidera.
Lagunas de Ruidera is part of Hidden Spain, a place very popular with those Spanish that know it exists but hardly ever visited by anyone else. The attraction is the string of beautiful lakes and waterfalls, one of the most important wetlands in Spain. Apart from the stunning scenery you can also take part in various water born activities. On arrival in Ruidera people were allowed to discover this beautiful part of Spain at their leisure then return to the Hotel in their own time.
On Monday night we had a special menu arranged for the club, 5 small treats to start including the famous cheese made locally and superb Iberico ham. A choice of Cod or Veal, with unlimited local wine which I must say was very pleasant indeed. We celebrated two birthdays, Bob Limehouse had reached the “dizzy” age of 70 and Colin Stickland made it to 65. For many the night was finished with a coffee and a little night cap.
Tuesday morning we departed mid morning after a hearty breakfast.
I took the lead on this event but I must thank Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event in Munera with Leondro and for generally giving their support. But most of all I must thank all the members that supported the event and all the kind words that many offered after the event.

JAGUARS – " In The Water!", Xmas 2016
After a week of unending rain our Cristmas lunch event on Sun 18th
Dec culminated in a torrential downpour causing a great deal of flooding &
partial road closures. ( Locally known as a Gota Frio)
Undaunted 51 real enthusiast & 16 Jaguars braved the weather to join one
another at Restaurant La Herradura in Los Montesinos for what can only be
described as “Jaguar in the Agua”. We were rewarded with a fantastic lunch offering four starters with the restaurants famous warm farm house bread followed by a choice between four main courses, delicious homemade delicate mini desserts, all accompanied with fine Spanish wine.
Enhancing the culinary delights of the day, Paul ( Pablo ) Monk entertained us with his superb Saxophone playing, with music , ranging from Bossanova, soft jazz & Christmas songs. An area was made available for those wishing to dance, the space quickly became fully occupied.
As a non fee paying club here on the Costa Blanca, occasionally we have to raise a few Euro's just to cover expenses. To help Club funds a year end raffle was organized. Molly & Brian Paterson generously organized around 30 articles enhanced further by very good member donations thus ensuring almost everyone participating was able to take home a suitable gift.
Our judges Christine & David Sleap presented Molly with a gift for all her
effort having also in their opinion the best Christmas style costume.
As is customary the club presented the restaurant staff with a trophy in appreciation of the restaurants hospitality. The event terminated around 18.00h with the members & guests returning home on a dark & very wet evening.
JAGUARS – The Cats Go Golfing

Members and guests of The Jaguar Enthusiast Club on the Costa Blanca gathered together on the 5th March for the second event of 2017 at the “Clubhouse” of the La Marquesa Campo de Golf situated between the villages of Rojales & Quesada. Members unfamiliar with the location were consolidated at Restaurant La Herradura in Los Montesinos for morning coffee prior to moving on in a 17 Jaguar car convoy to the club house at La Marquesa Campo de Golf to join the other 10 cars already there.
A fantastic display of 27 shining timeless examples of British Automobile Engineering graced the restaurants car park in a spectacle of gleaming grace & pace, just a beautiful sight to see. Our record of 90 members at a local event was very nearly broken this time. On arrival, the 88 members & guests were treated to a Cava reception, prior to selecting one of the three outside seating areas to join their respective friends for a pleasant discussion accompanied by a wide range of beverages.
Lunch was taken at 14.00h hrs in the restaurants spacious dining room, our attendance numbers enabling us to have the whole area exclusively for ourselves with a round table configuration providing most members with a panoramic view of the golf course. Members were offered a selection from five starters including Salmon roulade, Spaghetti vongole, Prosciutto Salad, Cheese quiche & Mushroom brioche, complimented with special country style bread & garlic cream. Six main courses were on offer from Cod, Pork, Liver & Bacon, Mango Chicken, Lamb Wellington & Rip Eye Steak, all accompanied by the usual range of fine Spanish wine, terminating with a selection of homemade desserts.
As is our Clubs custom, a trophy was presented to David the Restaurant Chef & his staff to express our gratitude for their hospitality and service. Finally members moved once again outside into the sun, primarily to the pool chill out area for their goodbyes prior to driving home.
Our next meeting on 22nd and 23rd April 2017 is something really special, The Big One 2017, a weekend event in Northern Spain. This event is proving to be very popular, we already have 197 people registered and 101 cars. Briefly the event consists of a cruise to Leon in Northern Spain, a two night stay at the fabulous Parador de Leon. A Gala Ball with a masked pre dinner reception in the cloisters. Then a cruise into the mountains on the Sunday to the Parador Villafranca for a 21 course cocktail lunch. I still have room if you would like to join us (Jaguar Owners only please). The Jaguar Enthusiast Club on the Costa Blanca always tries to do the best it can for it’s members, so something a bit different this time “Meet The Tiger”. Members, friends and invited guests gathered together on the 4th June 2017 for a taste of Asia at the exquisite Taj Mahal Restaurant in Benimar, Benijofar. I know not everyone likes Indian cuisine so a risky choice, I should not have worried, the food was fabulous. Personally I really enjoy Indian food, and The Taj Majal did not let us down, authentic recipes in a restaurant decorated to enhance the theme. What I was really impressed with was the way they handled some special dietary requirements, for example my wife requires Gluten free and other people were given specially prepared dishes to suit their particular requirements without any problems at all. My sincerest thanks to The Taj Mahal, most impressed.

Sunday 23rd July 2017, another wonderful day out for the members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain. Wonderful cars, nice people, brilliant food and great service the perfect recipe for a perfect day out and a great excuse to get the beloved Big Cat out on the road. The range of cars spread across the years, from a stunning 60’s E type to the latest XF saloon. S and X Types, XK8’s and XKR’s, XJ’s and two beautiful examples of the model XJS. A total of 17 cars and 47 people, a good turnout, especially for this time of year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, and of course a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event, a brilliant job as usual.
It’s “silly season” here in Spain, visitors, friends and family descend on most of us this time of year which makes the planning of events more difficult which is why we have not fixed the time or location of the next meeting so far, but we will sort it out very soon. Later in the year, I am planning a very special event “Jaguars Score a Goal”, a run into the mountains to dine on some of the finest food in a stunning location and the chance of meeting a celebrity from the world of sport. I hope to announce more information in the next few weeks.
